Slack Message Counter and Export Statistics

Find out exactly how much your team has said in Slack, by channel, by person and by year.

Slack does not give you a simple total of how many messages your workspace holds. Its own analytics only show recent activity, and only on paid plans. This counter fills that gap using the export file Slack lets admins download. Load the ZIP file, or the unzipped folder, and the page reads every channel and every day of history. You get total messages, total words, an AI token estimate, the number of active members and the date range covered. Tables show your busiest channels, your most active members and how activity changed each year. The whole process runs locally in your browser. Your messages are never uploaded, which makes it safe to use even on sensitive workspaces.

What You Can Learn From the Numbers

Message totals per year show how your team communication has grown. Channel tables reveal where real work happens and which channels are dead. Member tables show who carries the most knowledge, which is useful for handovers and succession planning.

Slack History as a Company Asset

A multi-year archive of team discussion records how problems were solved and decisions were made. That context is valuable for internal AI assistants and, after anonymization, for companies that license real business conversation data.

Keep Your Export Secure

Your export contains names, emails and private discussions. Store it in an encrypted location, limit who can open it and delete old copies. Check your company policy and local law before sharing any part of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I count all messages in a Slack workspace?

Export your workspace from Workspace settings, Import/Export Data, then load the ZIP file here. The tool adds up every message in every exported channel and day file. Join and leave notices are skipped so the total reflects real conversation.

Does a Slack export include private channels and DMs?

Not on free or Pro plans. Those exports cover public channels only. Business+ and Enterprise Grid admins can request an export that includes private channels and direct messages, so your real total is often higher than a standard export shows.

Is it safe to load my Slack export into this page?

Yes. The file is opened by your own browser using built in features. Nothing is uploaded to a server and nothing is stored after you close the tab.

What are tokens and why are they shown?

Tokens are the text units AI systems use, about four characters or three quarters of a word each. They are the standard way to measure a dataset for AI search, assistants or data licensing, so the tool estimates them for you.

My export is very large. Will it work?

Exports up to a few gigabytes work in a modern browser, though large ones take a minute or two. ZIP files over 4 GB use a format this page cannot open; unzip them first and choose the folder instead.
