What Is RPM and How Is It Different from CPM?

RPM (Revenue Per Mille) is the amount you earn per 1,000 total video views, calculated after Facebook takes its revenue share. CPM (Cost Per Mille) is what advertisers pay Facebook per 1,000 ad impressions — it is the gross rate before any deductions. As a creator, RPM is the number that actually matters for your income calculations, because it reflects what lands in your account rather than what advertisers spent.

The relationship between CPM and RPM is: RPM = CPM × Creator Share × Ad Load Rate. If advertisers pay a $10 CPM, Facebook keeps approximately 45% ($4.50), leaving you with 55% ($5.50). However, not every view serves an ad — ad load rate (the percentage of views that include an ad) is typically 40–70% depending on your content length and category. This means your effective RPM on a $10 CPM with 50% ad load might be around $2.75 per 1,000 total views.

Improving your RPM requires either increasing the advertiser CPM your content attracts (by shifting to higher-value niches or growing your US audience share), increasing your ad load rate (by making longer videos that can serve more mid-roll ads), or improving your viewer retention rate (since ads only count if viewers watch past the ad unit). All three levers together can dramatically increase RPM without requiring more views.
